Cleaning- Appliances Part 2

Dream Doors Cleaning

  • Run the microwave on full power for 3 minutes with a mug filled with water and lemon in the centre, let the water sit for three more minutes after. (the reason for this is twofold- softening food spills and eliminating any odours).
  • Wipe down the interior walls with a soft cloth soaked in warm soapy water.
  • Remove the turntable and scrub its wheels with a toothbrush (again, not one you use!)
  • If plastic, clean the exterior with an all-purpose cleaner and cloth, paying close attention to the fan slats. If stainless-steel, wipe with a rinsed cloth along with water and dishwashing liquid.
  • Finally, buff dry the appliance with a clean cloth.

Toaster/ Toaster Oven

  • Unplug and empty the crumb tray
  • Remove the racks and soak in warm, soapy water. Be sure to scrub away any charred food with a brush or a sponge.
  • Clean the inside with a wet cloth and dishwashing liquid. Remove burned-n food with a toothbrush or old credit card. Or use a wet pastry brush to reach into the gaps of a normal toaster.
  • Remove the knobs from the appliance and soak them in soapy water. Laster, dry and replace them.
  • Wipe the outside using a soapy cloth. If your toaster is chrome, use a ball of aluminium foil to rub off rust spots.

Freezer- Remember to defrost it before you start. To do this:

  • Empty and food into a cool box and remove any racks or draws to be washed separately.
  • Put towels or a large container under the freezer to catch any water as the ice melts. Make sure to frequently empty the bowl or wring out the towels.
  • Dislodge ice by gently levering it off with a plastic utensil.
  • Do not use electrical appliances such as hairdryers to warm the freezer (this can cause electrocution!) instead put a bow of water in the bottom of the freezer and close the door.

Make sure you lay down newspaper or towels to catch any stray water. Then do the following:

  • Use a clean cloth along with anti-bacterial spray (or a simple solution of hot water and white vinegar) to wipe down the inside of the freezer.
  • Rinse away any detergent and dry the surface with a tea towel or paper towel.
  • Wash the racks and drawers in the same way then replace them.
  • Wipe the outside of the freezer, paying special attention to the handle.
  • Return any food removed and set the appliance to freeze mode.

  • Fill the kettle with a solution of water and household vinegar and let it soak for an hour. (alternatively use lemon juice, it does the same but also makes it smell better!)
  • Boil the kettle.
  • Empty the kettle and rinse it thoroughly to get rid of any excess vinegar
  • Wipe the outside with a general-purpose cleaner and cloth.

Oven- That burning smell in your oven? A sign it needs a clean. Start chipping off loose pieces, then use ammonia on heat-fused food. Baking soda and white vinegar on the bottom makes for a good cleaning solution.

Washing Machine- Yet again we go to our old friend white vinegar and baking soda to save the day. Run the machine with hot water then add the cleanser. After letting it sit for 30-60 minutes restart your machine, let it drain then wipe it dry.
